Diary of a Tribeswoman Yeo Jingwen

Wokays. Firstly, when I heard "BOOT CAMP", I was expecting hell. Well, not literally of cos, but something along the lines like military discipline, rigid timings, scary and fierce ICs…basically not much fun. Luckily, it turned out to be the exact opposite!

0930am - Fall-in time. Upon arrival, we were required to fill in 3 questionnaires, with questions so out of the blue and funny we were thinking what the hell was going on (yeah, some of us discussed answers cos we didn't know it wasn't allowed).

Then, it was off to the field at pasir ris park to kick off the day. After splitting into 3 different tribes - Arapaho, Bellacoola & Cherokee (is the spelling right? Ah…) - there came the Survivor Reward Challenge. Boy. Was it physically excruciating for everyone. Endurance runs (that had poor Gina nearly coughing her lungs out and the Bellacoola tribe shouting they will not give up); knockout rounds for push-ups (where Wai Mun "out pushed" everyone), sit-ups (with Wing trying hard to save her tribe) and squats with medicine balls (Sab did an amazing 400!!!). The reward? Ice-cold coke for lunch.

Later in the day, we had intensive ball handling training. Work those magic fingers they call it. At night, the tribe members were told they were going on a night walk blindfolded (left, right, left, right, left…). Reached the hedge maze and the tribes were asked to reach the center to retrieve their coloured bands (can still remember Charmaine screaming her lungs out at the "ghosts", haha).

After a tiring day, it was finally time for lights out. How everyone managed to squeeze into 1 chalet room is beyond me. But who cares as long as they can catch some sleep right?

830am - Rise & shine. Breakfast of various Bonjour! Bread with baked beans (real special taste man) and sardine (which unfortunately was left unopened due to lack of a can opener, WHO???). Then, another reward challenge. Human totem poles (Kudos to Liyan for her unwavering pose that won her tribe the longest lasting totem pole), eating of preservatives, lemons, limes, green pepper…(someone applaud Ming Jia for stuffing 5 limes and half a lemon into her mouth at once!), hands and feet game that had everyone tumbling over one another…it was great fun!

Touch selection time! The longest leisure touch playing time ever. But it was total great fun! Thanks to the TJ girls for coming down and sparring with us.

BBQ night. Full of mouth watering food (a lot were burnt initially la…pai seh ah!). Next came the long awaited tribal performances. Arapaho put up a dazzling and stunning performance of tribal courting rituals; Bellacoola with their well choreographed traditional tribal dance; and Cherokee with their highly detailed performance with the best models in the house. And not to forget the memorable song by the tribal chiefs! - we wanna, we wanna, we wanna, we wanna, we wanna really really really really wanna watch you grow…

The night ended amidst lots of laughter and memories to bring back with. Thank you for the great fun Blacks.

Special thanks to:
- All tribal chiefs for planning the camp.
- Juan and Gina for preparing the food.
- Juan and Mun for the highly entertaining "Hai-Dai Quan".
- Khai, for being a great sport by joining in Arapaho's performance.
- Everyone for being a part of the camp and creating great fun together.
